Abstract: /b>Zhu Xi interprets the “Speech of the Book of Thoughts” and said, “Rectification of people is used to meaning, while gentlemen is used to profit.” It means that “rights are suitable for the principles of nature; profits are what the face wants.” It only defines “rights” and “profits” separately, and does not mean to completely set up meaning and profit. At the same time, through a step further quoting what Cheng Xi and Yang Shi said, he expressed the complete differences between righteous people and gentlemen on power, and gave a helping hand. It is the opposite of “meaning for meaning” and “to raise a monthly priceto profit”. Zhu Xi interprets “The Book of Thoughts·Li Ren” “Revised people to express their meanings, and gentlemen to express their benefits”, saying: “The meaning is what the law of heaven is suitable for; profit is what the face wants.”[1](P .73) This is often confused by later scholars in the words of Juan: “The meaning is the public of the laws of nature; profit is the selfishness of human desires”, and it is mistakenly believed that the meaning and profit equal to the laws of nature and human desires. Regarding Yili, Cheng said: “Mencius distinguished between Shun and Zhi only in Yili. The words are said to be too far away from each other, and the conflict is too small. Identity and profit are just public and private. Talent comes out, and it is easy to speak out… Short-term is the common sense of the whole country. Everyone knows to take advantage of benefits and avoid harm, and the sages do not care about short-term goals, but only regard them as saying things and inappropriate things. ”[3](P.176) The “Importance and profit” are just public and private. Only by virtue is made, and by virtue of speaking, it is not difficult to understand that it is to stand up to the right and profit equal to public and private. However, Cheng also said: “Anything that is harmless is profit, and a righteous person does not want profit without profit… Benevolence and righteousness have not been humble. ”[3](P.249) “The sage does not discuss anything about profit, but it does not harm the meaning of the sage. ”[3](P.396) means that in terms of meaning and profit, correct people talk about meaning; in terms of profit and harm, “correct people do not want profit without seeking profit” and “benevolence and morality have not been absent.” From this we can see that in Cheng, meaning and profit have both opposites and connections with each other. As the saying goes, “the sages regard meaning as profit, and righteousness and peace are profit”[3](P.173).
